Einstein Papers Project

The Albert Einstein Archives at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Einstein Papers Project at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California are working together on several issues of common interest, the most important of which is the maintenance of a unified database containing records of every item in the Albert Einstein Archives in Jerusalem.
This database had been established in the 1990ies, based on the original paper documentation established by Einstein’s private secretary of many years, Helen Dukas, who, with the active help of the physicist and historian of science, Gerald Holton, took it upon herself to bring order into Einstein’s paperwork after his death in 1955. Under Diana Kormos-Buchwald’s guidance, the project picked up momentum and in 2003, the public database went online on www.alberteinstein.info. In 2013, the Albert Einstein Archives (AEA) and the Einstein Papers Project (EPP) launched a new version of the database with a new access tool with tens of thousands of additional documents and thousands of freely accessible digitized documents. In 2024 the database has been integrated into a newly designed and branded website, the one you’re currently on.

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Princeton University Press are the co-sponsors of the historical edition of Einstein’s papers, The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein. The Einstein Papers Project will provide the first complete picture of a massive written legacy that ranges from Einstein’s first work on the special and general theories of relativity and the origins of quantum theory to expressions of his profound concern with civil liberties, Zionism, pacifism, and disarmament. The series will contain over 14,000 documents and will fill twenty-five volumes. So far, seventeen volumes have been published. Volume 18 is expected for August/September 2026.
